KRISTOFFERSSON - GOING FOR A FOURTH TITLE WOULD BE FUN
Friday 27th of November 2020
Triple FIA World Rallycross Champion Johan Kristoffersson was crowned for the third time this week. Sweden’s Kristoffersson took a year away from World RX in 2019 but returned with a bang this season, winning four of the eight rounds to secure the Drivers’ title ahead of 2016 Champion Mattias Ekstrom. He adds the success to the back-to-back titles he won in 2017 and 2018.
“The first time you win the championship is obviously something special, and the second title was memorable as I won eleven out of twelve rounds. Now, this is emotional because we did it with our own team, where everything started some years ago. I’m very happy, and I am extra happy for my teammates who could join me on this journey,” said Kristoffersson.
The 2020 season took place over four double-header weekends, starting at Holjes-Sweden in August, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Racing within the restrictions imposed by the fight against COVID-19 brought an extra challenge for everyone in World RX. “There have been a lot of instructions and restrictions to follow, and it’s been a bit stressful trying to stay away from the virus. Some people have it without showing symptoms, so you never know,” explained Kristoffersson.
The Kristoffersson Motorsport driver says his ability to be fast from the first practice session in World RX events has helped him achieve his goal in 2020. “Throughout the years I have vastly improved my ability to find the pace early on. You have to do your homework about the grip and style of driving, and so has the rest of the team. The first race we won on Sunday was in Barcelona. The semi-final there was very nice. We looked beaten all day, but turned everything around and for the first time that weekend I could enjoy the track properly. Doing that ahead of Ekstrom was a great feeling. It’s too early to say if we will be able to go for a fourth title next year, but it would be great fun.”
