Finland’s Rasmus Tuominen, the 2019 RX Academy Champion, will compete in the FIA European Rallycross Championship for Super1600 with Finnish team SET Promotion this year.

The 19-year-old will drive an updated Renault Twingo in 2020, and will be coached and mentored by FIA World Rallycross Championship race winner Toomas ‘Topi’ Heikkinen, who made a Supercar return at the World RX of France last year with the GRX Taneco team and was quickest in Q1.

Tuominen will race the Renault Twingo in the six-round Euro RX Super1600 season as his prize for winning the RX Academy last season, following in the footsteps of former champions Jesse Kallio and Sami-Matti Trogen.

“When I was little and started watching rallycross, I remember Andreas Bakkerud winning in Euro RX Super1600 in a Twingo. I’ve watched a lot of onboards since – Super1600 cars are just such special and cool race cars. It’s so good to be making this step with SET.

Coming from front-wheel-drive cars so far in my career, I think Super1600 will be a really good step for me and the driving style will be similar to the Clio RS RX I drove in RX Academy last season,” said Tuominen.

“I think the season will be tough from the start. Of course I want to be on the top step but I know it won’t be easy. I want to be consistent but as the season progresses, I think the speed will come naturally and I hope to get some serious results. I won in Latvia in RX Academy last season so I’m really looking forward to going back there.”

The SET Promotion team has won nine Euro RX titles in its history, including the FIA European Rallycross Championship for Supercar title with Reinis Nitiss in 2018.

The Euro RX Super1600 season will join World RX events in Barcelona-Catalunya, Portugal, Sweden, Russia, France and Latvia.
