ROUND-UP: WORLD RX DRIVERS STAR ON THE ICE
Monday 20th of January 2020
Former FIA World Rallycross Championship podium finisher Jean-Baptiste Dubourg and 2019 World RX title runner-up Andreas Bakkerud starred in the latest weekend of the Trophee Andros ice racing winter series at Serre Chevalier.
Dubourg claimed a pair of podiums to move into the points lead in the series he has won four times. Bakkerud meanwhile, racing in his first full-time season in the series after selected outings in previous years – in the first year of an all-electric transition for Trophee Andros – finished in the top five in both of the weekend’s rounds.
Double 2019 World RX event winner Niclas Gronholm kept himself sharp in Lapland, competing in the Artic Lapland Rally. Driving a Skoda Fabia R5, Gronholm battled the wintery conditions and finished P6 overall and P5 in class. Mercedes Formula One driver Valtteri Bottas finished P9.
Gronholm’s 2018 and 2019 GRX Taneco team mate, and 2019 World RX of Benelux winner Timur Timerzyanov was also in action in his native Russia, competing in the 23rd Race of Champions winter event in identical Lada racing machines, joined by FIA European Rallycross Super1600 front runner and compatriot Egor Sanin.
The Swedish Motorsport Gala took place in Sweden, where some of the country’s top rallycross names, like World RX Champion Timmy Hansen, Euro RX champion Robin Larsson and RX2 International Series champion Oliver Eriksson were acknowledged for their achievements in 2019. Other prizes went to the likes of Team Hansen MJP, for winning the World RX Teams’ title, Sebastian Eriksson for winning the World RX of Sweden at Holjes.Share this story on Facebook Share this story on Twitter
