The FIA announced at the World Motor Sport Council that, following a detailed tender process, the Austrian company Kreisel has been selected as the supplier of electric kits for the phased introduction of electric-powered cars for the FIA World Rallycross Championship from 2021.

World Championship teams will be able to retrofit this kit in their current cars or build new cars around it with the support of the supplier.

The kit price will be 300k Euro plus 100k Euro for four years of support. The first prototype will be presented to the teams in March 2020 and available to order from 17 April 2020.

The Council also approved the selection of QEV Technologies to develop the ‘arrive and drive’ concept of the FIA Junior eRX Championship, which begins in 2021. QEV will develop a bespoke 4-wheel drive, tubular chassis, electric car with a 32kWh battery developing 250kW.

Up to 20 cars will compete against each other as the first international electric step to Rallycross over six European rounds at a cost of 150k Euro (or 30k Euro per race).

For 2020, IMG Motorsports will introduce an electric racing element to the FIA World Rallycross Championship weekend in the shape of the development series codenamed Projekt E.

Projekt E will see electric-powered cars compete on the same weekend as traditional World RX Supercars at selected European rounds of the 2020 championship.

This new-look race weekend format will allow rallycross fans to enjoy the traditional internal combustion engines – and be given a glimpse of the future for production-based cars.

IMG is introducing electric racing to World RX as an acknowledgement of a future that embraces sustainability, responsibility and advanced technologies.

The aim of Projekt E is to evaluate electric racecars in a World RX environment in accordance with the roadmap for electrification of the FIA World Rallycross Championship which was has been ratified by the FIA World Motorsport Council.
