GRX Taneco Team’s FIA World Rallycross Championship driver Niclas Gronholm will make his rally debut at the Arctic Lapland Rally on January 24 – 26.

Gronholm will compete in a R5 rally car, co-driven by Antti Linnaketo and will take on Formula 1 World Championship driver Valteri Bottas, who will also make his rally debut in Lapland in a Ford Fiesta WRC car.

“The goal is to stay on the track and get as many miles as possible. Whether the result is 20th or fifth does not mean anything in this experiment. It's just to have a good idea from this first rally, then we can evaluate the experience more closely afterwards. I’m using this to practice for rallycross, in rally you get a pretty good feeling for all kinds of driving,” said Gronholm. “The biggest challenge, of course, is to drive with pace notes and to understand it all. Fortunately, Antti will help me a lot with that.”

Gronholm’s father, two-time World Rally Champion Marcus Gronholm has won the rally twice before. Niclas Gronholm tested the Fabia before Christmas and will drive the car again before the rally. “I know that it won’t be easy, but it’s more a question of going to the rally and having fun on snowy roads,” he said. Gronholm drove a GRX Taneco Hyundai i20 Supercar in World RX 2018 and finished fourth three times, in Catalunya-Barcelona, Latvia and Germany. He was seventh in the Drivers’ standings.
